from Rod Dixon Running.
New Zealand athletics
historian Peter Heidenstrom rates Rod Dixon the most versatile runner
ever produced by New Zealand. He has also been voted the most versatile
athlete of the past quarter century by the definitive international
athletics publication Runners World magazine.
In his book Athletics
of the Century Heidenstrom says Dixon had so much ability
at so many distances that he sometimes suffered from boredom and
sought new challenges.
New Zealand has never had another runner with Dixon's talent, and
it would be idle to pretend otherwise," Heidenstrom says.
Rod Dixon first represented New Zealand at
the world crosscountry championships in 1971 and was stiil wearing
the silver fern at the age of nearly 38, in 1988.
Since leaving national
athletics, he has enjoyed success at world masters level, winning
world middle and long distance titles.
Inducted
Rod
Dixon was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1995
and it is impossible to quibble with that selection.
